Argelia Matus. Contar el polvo de la tierra [Argelia Matus. Counting dust out of the soil] is just as impossible as counting the hair that’s growing from our scalps or the hair that has been let go in its search for other territories. Hair is a part of our bodies, It is born and it grows as a physical memory of our existence. Our genetics are contained within our hair; a part of the ones who preceded us, and of whom may come after too. It resembles the passing of time and, at the same time, how time passes us.
Working with hair, especially embroidered, is a practice that requires dedication and patience due to its complexity. It comes from centuries ago and historically has been characterized and performed by women. Argelia has employed this material for fifteen years as an attempt to reconstruct or transform this organic element that, even though it has lost its body, still keeps a strong bond of symbolic union with it. Her practice is a bridge between identities, rituals and myths, mainly from Istmo, that intersect with hair.
The artwork in this exhibit behold an emotional load that is anecdotal but also critical and confrontational. Her huipiles and gold embroidered canvases, constitute the beginning of her experience working with hair with an intimate and cathartic intention that reflects on our own body and its fragility. The majority of her series of drawings are self-portraits in imaginary scenes created by the artist. Even though Argelia was born and raised in a culture that is characterized by its colorfulness, she shows a great respect and care for the colors she decides on, because color is part of her identity, intimately bonded to her memories.
Argelia’s work shares the intimacy of its representations with those who observe it. It is an extension of her being, a witness of her presence and of the memories of the territories she inhabits in a tangible or imaginary way.
Contar el polvo de la tierra es igual de imposible que contar el cabello que nace en nuestras cabelleras o que se ha desprendido de éstas en busca de otros territorios. El cabello es parte de nuestro cuerpo; nace y crece de él, crea identidades y puede entenderse, también, como memoria tangible de nuestro existir. En el cabello se encuentra contenida nuestra genética; una parte de quienes anteceden en nuestro linaje y de quienes, quizás, sucederán de él. Remite a diferentes temporalidades. Es sinónimo del transcurrir del tiempo y, a su vez, de cómo éste nos transcurre.
El trabajo con el cabello, principalmente bordado, es una práctica que requiere dedicación y paciencia debido a su complejidad. Se remite a siglos pasados e históricamente ha sido protagonizado por mujeres. Argelia Matus ha empleado este material durante quince años con un afán de reconstruir o transformar un elemento orgánico que, aunque desprendido de su cuerpo, mantiene un fuerte lazo de unión simbólica con él. Su práctica es un puente de identidades, de los ritos y mitos que se tejen respecto del cabello, principalmente del Istmo de Tehuantepec.
Las obras que conforman esta muestra portan una carga emocional y narrativa diversa en direcciones no solo anecdóticas sino, también, críticas y confrontativas. Los huipiles y lienzos con hoja de oro constituyen el inicio de su exploración con cabello con una intención íntima y catártica que busca reflexionar sobre el propio cuerpo y su fragilidad. Su serie de dibujos son, en gran medida, autorrepresentaciones en escenarios imaginados por la autora. A pesar de que Argelia nació y creció en una cultura que suele ser caracterizada por su vasto colorido, muestra gran respeto y cuidado por los colores que decide emplear como destellos, pues en la construcción de su identidad están íntimamente ligados a su memoria.
La obra de Argelia Matus comparte la intimidad de sus representaciones con quienes la observan. Es extensión de su ser, testigo de su presencia y de las memorias de los territorios que habita de manera tangible o imaginaria.
