Structural Friendships. A documentary look at the relationship between Nancarrow and Juan O’Gorman.

Casa del Lago

22 de noviembre de 2017 – 18 de febrero de 2018

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of musician and composer Conlon Nancarrow (USA, 1912-1997), an exhibition of his work linked to the architectural work of Juan O’Gorman (Mexico, 1905-1982) was presented at Casa de Lago, taking as its starting point the house-studio built by Juan O’Gorman in the early 1950s for Conlon Nancarrow, who lived there until the end of his life.

Amistades Estructurales. Una mirada documental a la relación entre Nancarrow y Juan O’Gorman [Structural friendships. A documentary look at the relationship between Conlon Nancarrow and Juan O’Gorman] aimed to illustrate the work, aesthetic affinities, and friendship between Conlon Nancarrow and Juan O’Gorman through unconventional means that were often not very evident.

Through the use of documents, objects, photographs, models, sound spaces and testimonies, the curatorship, led by Adriana Sandoval and Víctor Palacios, depicted the architectural space in which Conlon Nancarrow lived for several decades and where he produced almost all of his work. The exhibition reveals a broader sense of living space, that is, it reveals the affective, creative and meaningful relationships that take place in the architectural space and even the architecture itself as a testimony of those who live it, of those who conceive it and of the society that preserves or forgets it.
