The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature held a posthumous tribute to recognize the work and career of sculptor Ángela Gurría (1929-2023), a fundamental reference for contemporary art in Mexico and the first woman to become a member of the Mexican Academy of Arts (1973), who died on February 17 at the age of 93.
Adriana Sandoval, Director of Fundación Espacio Nancarrow O’Gorman, was guest of honor at the ceremony as a testimony to the affectionate relationship between Gurría and O’Gorman. In 2021-2022 The Espacio Nancarrow O’Gorman Foundation was honored to exhibit Espejo del tiempo, a sculpture by Ángela Gurría, in the exhibition Juan O’Gorman y su casa cueva. Apuntes para una reconstrucción (Museo Nacional de Arquitectura-Palacio de Bellas Artes), as a witness of the close relationship between the two artists, as well as of the multiple stories that could have taken place in the garden of the cave-house, where the work lived for many years.
